But most people are like that. They don't know what they don't know.Cheryl Anne Gardnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564041914501542048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20796627.post-66460991614404210212010-11-11T19:47:06.086-06:002010-11-11T19:47:06.086-06:00Some time back, there was a group project on one o...Some time back, there was a group project on one of the "online writers' communities" called something like "Dialogue only." Tagline: Exposition is for amateurs.

Silly me, I tried to tell them you can have exposition in dialogue ("As you know, Bob, we're here to kill this guy and take all his chili recipes..."), but they didn't believe me.

Me, I love all the bang-bang-shoot-'em-up fake military/cop movies that have the special ops/SWAT guys being briefed in the chopper/van on the way to the insertion point. Love that.Levi Montgomeryhttp://www.levimontgomery.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20796627.post-42329103886827757212010-11-11T10:39:07.547-06:002010-11-11T10:39:07.547-06:00Me too Levi. I know when my characters need to speak and what they need to say, and usually, like in real life, they say very little.

Besides, I love beautifully written exposition. Love to read it, try to write it.Cheryl Anne Gardnerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12564041914501542048noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20796627.post-11361267217699754972010-11-11T09:48:28.141-06:002010-11-11T09:48:28.141-06:00I really truly wish I had a dollar for every time ...I really truly wish I had a dollar for every time I've said exactly that: "We call it storytelling, not storyshowing!"

Words can only tell. They cannot show. "Show, don't tell," when it comes right down to it, is only a smoky, mirrorsy, handwavy way to say "You told of different things than I would have."

Subtract the inherent insinuation that the speaker is a better writer than the person being spoken to, and what's left? A very poorly worded way to tell someone how to word their story.Levi Montgomeryhttp://www.levimontgomery.comnoreply@blogger.com
